Mindfulness meditation can decrease the pain a person experiences:

“50% of subjects had greater than 50% reductions in PRI (Pain Rating Index); 65% had a reduction of at least 33%” (Kabat-Zinn 1982)

“A 58% reduction in PRI and 30% decreases in BPPA was reported in a majority of subjects. Decreases of 35-50% in mean MSCL, TMD and GSI scores were also found. No change in these measures were reported in the comparison group.” (Kabat-Zinn et al. 1985)

Mindfulness and cancer studies:

“Found increases in patients quality of life and sleep quality while decreasing symptoms of anxiety and depression as measured with SOSI. Also found decreases in systolic blood pressure that persisted for up to 1 year postintervention and significant decreases in several immune parameters, including interferon gamma and interleukin 10 (both associated with depression in cancer patients). Also found a threefold increase in IL-4, which slows the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro.” (Carlson et al. 2003,2004 )

“Found improving sleep quality, particularly in patients whose sleep complaints are stress related. Although there was no correlation between the amount of formal meditation practice and sleep improvement, there was a positive interaction between feelings of being refreshed after sleep and the amount of “informal” practice the patient reported performing throughout the week between classes.” (Shapiro et al. 2003)
